Girls of Outer Space
I hope I am not getting tiresome with my lists of various female superpoderosas. After all there has been Ladies of Action, and though Satya Warrior was not gender specific, all the pics were of the female type. I mentioned it again (and of course displayed pics and a vid) in Girls of Sealand. And, though I titled it Madam Speaker, the post had little to do with Nancy Pelosi and a whole bunch with lady action heroes. I suppose Blondenfreude fits in here. On the dark side there were The Lesbian Vampires.Nonetheless, I think this is a worthy project. After all, it is the weekend. And does anyone want to hear me drone on about politics or the necessity of making guns and weed freely available?
So, brought to you from the same committee that compiled the list of Ladies of Action here are our picks for Girls of Outer Space.
It seems to me if sci-fi tells us anything, it’s that in the future, the galaxies will be filled with hot-bod, kick-ass women and awesome androids in skin-tight space jumpers. That, and they will all be armed with wicked-looking guns. I may have to get my body frozen after all.
Since Battlestar Galactica is just swarming with these types, the Girls of Battlestar Galactica have been excluded from this list. I could easily compile a list from that series alone—and probably will one of these days.
So, with that caveat, here are the top ten hotties of outer space:
10. Leeloo (Milla Jovich) from The Fifth Element.
I must admit I was not familiar with this Supreme Being. But when I saw the swiss-cheesey thing I was won over.
9.Barbarella (Jane Fonda) in Barbarella.
Ok, I know the history of Hanoi Jane and Barbarella is possibly the stupidest sci-fi flick ever, but it is impossible to ignore. In fact, Barbarella may be the ultimate glam space girl. And she saved the world and had sex at the same time—hard to top that.
8. Alex (Farrah Fawcett) in Saturn 3.
I’m not telling you to rush out and get this. It has been suggested a better title for this stinker might be Out of Uranus. But back in her day Farrah was breathtaking.
And the brief nude scene helped a bunch in getting her on the list:
7. Aeryn Sun (Claudia Black) in Farscape.
Who doesn’t love a Sebacean girl?
6. River Tam (Summer Gau) of Firefly and later Serenity.
Not to diminish Summer at all—but with me it’s hard to beat an Outer Space Western with Buffy the Vampire Slayer overtones.
5. Seven of Nine of Star Trek: Voyager
Jeri Ryan in a cat suit. Enough said about that.
4. Dr. Eleanor Arroway in Contact
All Jodie Foster has to do to get on my list is make a flick that has something vaguely to do with space.
3. Padme Amidala in several of the prequel Star Wars
Natalie Portman has “The Stare”—heavenly and dangerous. And did you notice not one ounce of body fat?
2. Ok, I did say no BSG chicks. But it’s my blog, and I have heard disturbing reports that Starbuck a/k/a Kara Thrace (Katee Sackhoff) is going to undergo a “profound event” in the upcoming season. That sucks.
If I was a writer on the show the “profound event” would be that she realized she was madly in love with Sharon/Boomer/Athena (Grace Park).
I was able to find this BSG gag reel in which Miss Sackhoff addressed these disturbing rumors in a very endearing way:
1. Ripley in Alien et al.
I know it’s not fair. Sigourney Weaver’s Ripley was already listed in Ladies of Action. But she is the ONE-- and this ain’t just a gesture to my Second Wave Sisters. Sigourney just got better and better as time went on—Alien, Aliens, Alien Resurrection.
It also gives me an opportunity to sneak in Call from Alien Resurrection. Winona Ryder was the cutest next generation robot ever:
Can you blame Ripley for flirting with her?
There are tons more. I think even the original Star Trek girls in the Sixties minis should be mentioned. Give me your favorites and one of these days I’ll do a whole new list.
Unless I have something better to do.
I won’t.

what a great post Becky... I just loved it... one of the very best articles you have ever posted you get 5 stars
Heh...I'll take Aeryn Sun over any of them any day. Seriously! The look, the leather, the hair, the voice, the really big gun, the ability to look like she's going to cry when inside she's saying "I am NOT a girl, I am NOT a girl..."
And the duster.
But thanks for the list. Does Agent Scully count?
And I like your Boomer/Starbuck comment--Heh. Starbuck should be so lucky!
A lot of SF is made by guys, so that's probably where all the women in leather and skin-tight clothes comes from...it's a "fantasy" to them. And sadly, that fantasy is coming close to real life (just take a look at Britney Spears and her gang).
But what really draws me to SF is the epic battles and love stories. It's the beautiful blend between "what if?" and being part of something "bigger than yourself" that makes SF so cool.
As far as your list goes, you had some good picks (aside from the one I had to hurry up and scroll down pass).
My favs were: Amadala, Seven of Nine, Ripley and Leloo. But not because of their looks. They each were well-written characters with a kick-butt attitude. (Except Leloo, that movie had a chessy storyline but it had its good moments).
I'd include: Max (Jessica Alba) from Dark Angel, Trinity (Carrie Ann-Moss) from The Matrix and Selene (Kate Beckinsale) from Underworld and Elektra Natchios (Jennifer Garner) from Daredevil (and I'm not talking about her in the 2nd one--that movie looked pretty crappy).
I do like lists!!! You've inspired me to do my own Top 10 men and women of SF/F.
Thanks for visiting my blog. Take care and God bless!
did you say that "barbarella is possibly the stupidest sci-fi flick ever"?!?!?! I think you are possibly the stupidest sci-fi fan ever!
Besides Jane Fonda being awesome, Barbarella the movie has so much more going for it than any movie on this list! Stylishly beautiful hand made sets, no tastless CG, genius toungue-in-cheek parody, mad scientists, bizarre inventions, and THE MATMOS!!!!!!
